Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 00:10:58 -0700 To: idm@hyperreal.com From: thermal@hooked.net (Joshua) Subject: germ, mpa, etc. GD asks about Germ's "Parrot" It speaks French, English, and a third unknown language (Binhex?) and tells several sailor jokes in each. Quite a bird! I could not resist - actually, it has plenty of trombone, a bit of voice (not really singing), and some bass from Scorn's bass player. It is all over the map, musically, starting in Techno Animal territory and travelling through experimental techno and even electronic jazz. The drum programming is some of the most intricate I have heard lately. One of the most original, challenging, and downright wacko electronic albums I have heard in recent years. Teep asks about Masters of Psychedelic Ambiance "Mu" An album of very short environments and incidents and occasional grooves, taking the playful trippiness of Datacide's "Flowerhead" and chopping it up into bite-size chunks. The beats are typical of the Rather Interesting releases - light, syncopated, layered, and processed - and the atmosphere is quirkily blissful. If you can find it, buy it. And for anyone in San Francisco Kinokuniya Bookstore in Japantown turns out to have a limited but intriguing selection of IDM releases imported from Japan on CD. Most of the material I found tonight I have never before encountered (e.g. a Japanese version of the "Artcore" compilation in a die-cut box), so those in the area might give it a browse. Excellent selection of books, too, and amazing noodles down the hall. Joshua / thermal@hooked.net
